Ingredients

  • 1 lb. lean ground beef or use ground turkey
  • 2 cloves garlic minced, about 1 tsp.
  • 1/2 tsp. kosher salt
  • 1/2 tsp. Smoked paprika
  • 1/8 tsp. black pepper
  • 4 hamburger buns or use rolls, use wheat/gluten-free, if needed
  • 1 tomato sliced
  • 4 leaves iceberg lettuce or whatever kind you like

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, preferably using your hands, thoroughly combine the meat, garlic, salt, paprika and pepper, and form into 4 round, flat patties. Press your thumb into the middle of each patty so it is a bit thinner in the middle (to help it cook evenly).
  • Heat a large cast iron skillet over medium-high heat (no oil needed). When it is hot, add the burgers and cook them for about 4 – 5 minutes per side, to your desired level of doneness. The pan should be hot enough that the burgers brown nicely on the outside but don’t blacken. (Alternatively, cook them on a grill over medium heat).
  • Meanwhile, toast the buns and slice the tomatoes. Serve them immediately on the toasted buns with tomatoes, lettuce, ketchup, mustard, barbecue sauce, or your favorite toppings or condiments.

Notes

Do Ahead or Delegate:  Combine the ingredients for the burgers, form into patties and refrigerate, slice the tomato.
Tip: Paprika, a popular spice that’s made from peppers (either bell peppers or chili peppers or a combination of the two) and has a deep red color, lends flavor and color to a variety of dishes including soups, chicken and paellas.  There are different varieties of paprika— some are sweet and others are spicier.  If the bottle is does not specify, it’s likely that the paprika is sweet. One variety, smoked paprika, is made from peppers that are dried over wood fires, and has a smoky, woodsy flavor.
Scramble Flavor Booster:  Double the garlic and increase the smoked paprika to 3/4 or 1 tsp.
