Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays. When I was a kid, I would spend hours and hours making my costumes and now I do the same with my boys. I also love it as an opportunity to get creative (and silly) with decorations, pumpkin carving, and coming up with fun and healthy Halloween snack recipes my kids will actually enjoy.

As a mom, though, I know that the quantity of sugar, plus the need to get some real food in those little bodies (and our own) to avoid massive meltdowns, along with the desire to be one of the “fun” parents, compounded by the mad rush to get everything ready can be a bit too much to handle. So, I wanted to help to make this crazy Halloween season a little easier for you.

Below you’ll find some creepy-fun snacks that are perfect for celebrations, snack time, or even as an appetizer night before the candy begins. These snacks are guaranteed to make everyone shriek with delight (and get some real food in their bellies at the same time)!  

In addition, with each dish I have laid out how to get your kids involved in the preparation of the dish so that it isn’t all on your plate and they get to practice some cooking skills at the same time.

Green Ghoul Smoothies Fun and Healthy Snack Recipes for HalloweenGreen Ghoul Smoothies

Packed with baby spinach and kale, these sweet and nutrient-dense smoothies are a super simple addition to Halloween snack time or even breakfast. All you need to do is drawn ghoulish faces onto clear plastic cups or prepare some slices of bananas and pieces of apples to make faces as seen above, make our Incredible Hulk Smoothies, and pour them into the prepared cups!

Here are some ways to get your kids involved in the fun:

Ages 2-5

  • Have them practice their chopping skills by slicing the banana with a butter knife
  • Invite them to put all of the ingredients into the blender
  • Ask them to scoop and pour the yogurt
  • Let them press the buttons when the ingredients are ready to blend
  • Ask them to decorate the plastic cups with ghoulish faces

Ages 6 and up

  • Any of the actions described above
  • With guidance, have them chop the apple with a paring knife
  • Let them make the smoothies entirely on their own
  • As them to decorate the plastic cups with ghoulish faces

Is there anything creepier than disembodied fingers?! These gruesome treats are sweetened only by the dates and also offer a nice dose of protein and healthy fats with the nuts and peanut butter. Get the recipe here.

An added bonus: once you’ve made these once and see how amazingly simple they are to make, you will be able to easily make your own version of Luna bars whenever you want (and for a lot less money).

Here’s how to get your kids involved in the fun:

Ages 2-5

  • Have them to add all the ingredients to the food processor
  • Invite them to turn on the power on the food processor
  • Ask them to mold the mixture into fingers
  • Invite them to press the almond “fingernails” into place

Ages 6 and up

  • Any of the actions described above
  • When you are comfortable with your kids using a food processor, have them make this dish entirely on their own

Deviled Eyes (Deviled Eggs for Halloween)Deviled Eyes

This takes the crowd-pleasing classic, deviled eggs, and turns it into a creepy delight. Everyone will get a nice dose of protein when they enjoy these and a good chuckle as they “eat eyes!”  Get the recipe here.

How’s how to get your kids involved in the fun:

Ages 2-5

  • Ask them to scoop the yolks out of the whites and into a small mixing bowl
  • Let them mash together the yolks and other filling ingredients
  • Get their help with scooping the yolk mixture back into the egg whites
  • Invite them to “draw” the blood shot lines onto the whites
  • Ask them to place the finished “eyes” onto a platter so that they look like pairs of blood shot eyes staring up at you

Ages 6-9

  • Any of the actions described above
  • Ask for their help in peeling the eggs (especially if they are easy to peel)

Ages 10 and up

  • Any of the actions described above
  • Invite them to make the “eyes” entirely on their own

Every holiday table has to include some creepy crawlies and this is a fun (and healthy) way to provide just that! Packed with fiber and protein, your kids will be so busy munching on “spider legs” that they won’t even stop to realize that they’re eating vegetables. Get the recipe here.

Here’s how to get your kids involved in the fun:

Ages 2-5

  • Have your kids pour the black beans into a strainer and then into the food processor
  • Invite them to squeeze the lime
  • Let them turn the food processor on
  • If you are blanching your green beans, have them help you to trim them first
  • Ask them to place the green beans into the bowl to serve as spider legs

Ages 6-10

  • Any of the actions described above
  • Have them measure out all of the ingredients
  • If you are blanching your green beans, invite them to help you with the process so they learn how
  • Invite them to create the creepiest spider they can

Ages 10 and up

  • Any of the actions described above
  • Have them prepare the dish entirely on their own (perhaps helping with the blanching of the green beans, if needed)

Blood and Brains (Cauliflower with Romesco Sauce)Blood and Brains

I mean, can it get any more gruesome than a brain covered in blood?! This dish is guaranteed to get squeals of delight as you slice and serve the brain! What is more, not only will everyone be getting a nice dose of vegetables, but with the addition of whole wheat bread and almonds to the sauce, they’ll also benefit from some whole grains and protein! Here’s how to get your kids involved in the fun:

Ages 2-8

  • Invite them to tear up the slice of bread to add to the blender or food processor
  • Ask them to add all the sauce ingredients to the blender or food processor
  • Have them help you pour the “blood” onto the “brain”

Ages 8 and up

  • Any of the actions described above
  • Have them prepare the entire dish (helping them to remove the cauliflower from the oven, if needed)
