The pears are divine served with vanilla ice cream or chopped and stirred into Greek yogurt. (Thanks to Scrambler Ann Shioji for the recipe.)

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1 - 2 whole cloves or use 1/4 tsp. ground cloves
  • 2 Bosc pears or any firm variety, peeled and quartered
  • 1 Tbsp. balsamic vinegar or other sweet vinegar

Instructions

  • In a small to medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of water, the sugar, and the cloves and bring it to a boil over medium-high heat.
  • Add the pears and vinegar to the liquid (it doesn’t have to be boiling yet), trying to immerse them as much as possible, and simmer for 10 – 15 minutes until they cut easily with a spoon.
  • Remove the pears from the pan and continue to simmer the liquid for 10 more minutes to turn it into a syrup. Serve the pears immediately with some or all of the syrup poured over them, or store them in the sauce for up to 3 days.
